The Golden Rules
There may be a skills shortage in Australia, which means more opportunities available to you as a Job Seeker, but you can still ruin your chances of getting that Job!
The Golden Rules of what to do, and what not to do in the professional arena:
- Pay attention to the details, follow through with commitments made, and don't be late to meetings or interviews.
- Do not use informal language, slang, colloquialisms or inappropriate language in any communications, either verbal or written.
- First impressions are essential, so pay attention to grooming and dress conservatively at the interview. Don't smoke, drink, eat, or chew gum.
- Prepare for the interview by researching the organisation. In our internet age there is easy access to information.
- Arrive prepared at the interview with your resume, copies of certificates, and other relevant documentation. Bring a working pen and provide clear and complete information on application forms.
- Maintain current information on your references and ask for their permission to be used as a reference before they are contacted.
- Provide truthful, honest, and correct information. Being caught for providing inaccurate information will hurt your future options for employment, so don't be remembered for the wrong reasons!
- Even though you may really want that job, don't be a Job Beggar; you want to be seen as a solution, not a problem.
- Don't ever close the door to a potential opportunity!
